Houghton
Harriers & Athletics Club is a long established athletics club in
the North East. The club was originally formed in 1958 and has played a
key role in developing people throughout the region. The club merged
with Peterlee for a period in recent years and gave the two, already
well established but relatively small, clubs a greater competitive edge
against larger clubs in the region. Today, Houghton Harriers &
Athletics Club is focused on the Houghton area and draws its membership
mainly from the region around Houghton-le-Spring and from within the
City of Sunderland.
The
club encourages the inclusion of all age groups and abilities and is
structured to participate in all track and field events. We continue to
grow as a club and are actively involved in all aspects of athletics
competition in the region, as well as County and National levels. The
club operates a positive youth development policy, where the needs of
the athlete come first and foremost. We offer a safe and enjoyable
athletic experience to all children aged 9 years and over. Children are
encouraged to try the whole range of athletic activities without
specialising in any particular field too early in their development.
Whilst
it is nice to win and success within the club is recognised, we do not
seek only the best performers. We believe a young athlete's greatest
competitor is his or her self, in constantly trying to better previous
performances and develop and improve as a person. To this end the club
welcomes anyone with an interest in athletics, regardless of ability.
New
members are always welcome. If you are between 9 and 99 and interested
in joining or would like to simply try athletics to see if you like it,
come along to one of our training sessions or see Contact Us for
details of how to contact the club.
